Calipers, bioimpedance scales and a DEXA scan can land several points apart on the same person on the same morning. Sticking to one method consistently matters far more than which one you pick.
Essential body fat is substantially higher for women than for men, so a figure that is athletic for one sits below healthy for the other. Reading against the right range is the whole point.
The US Navy circumference method estimates body fat from waist, neck, and (for women) hip measurements relative to height. Studies show it is accurate to within ±3–4% compared to DEXA scan (considered the gold standard) for most adults. It tends to overestimate fat in very muscular people and underestimate in those with high central adiposity. For research-grade accuracy, DEXA or hydrostatic weighing is needed, but for tracking changes over time, the Navy method is practical and consistent.
Body fat categories by the American Council on Exercise: Men — Essential fat: 2–5%, Athletes: 6–13%, Fitness: 14–17%, Average: 18–24%, Obese: 25%+. Women — Essential fat: 10–13%, Athletes: 14–20%, Fitness: 21–24%, Average: 25–31%, Obese: 32%+. Women naturally carry more essential fat due to hormonal, reproductive, and structural differences. "Essential fat" is the minimum needed for basic physiological function.
BMI (Body Mass Index) uses only height and weight — it cannot distinguish fat from muscle. A muscular athlete at 90 kg may have a "overweight" BMI yet 10% body fat, while a sedentary person at the same BMI may have 28% body fat. Body fat percentage directly measures the ratio of fat mass to total body weight, making it a more meaningful health metric. That said, BMI is a useful population-level screening tool despite its individual limitations.
For men: Measure neck circumference below the larynx (Adam's apple), sloping slightly downward at the front; measure abdomen at the navel. For women: Measure neck the same way; measure waist at the narrowest point (above the navel); measure hips at the widest point. Use a flexible tape pulled snug but not compressing skin. Take 2–3 measurements of each site and average them. Measure at the same time of day (morning, before eating) for consistency when tracking progress.
Visible abs typically appear at ≤15% body fat for men and ≤22% for women, as subcutaneous fat (stored under the skin) overlying the abdominal muscles becomes thin enough to reveal the underlying muscle definition. A full six-pack usually requires 10–12% for men and 18–20% for women. Genetics strongly influence where fat is stored last — some people show abs at higher body fat percentages than others.
