Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate hours on a time card?
For each day, subtract the clock-in time from the clock-out time, then subtract any unpaid break. For example 09:00 to 17:30 is 8.5 hours; take off a 30-minute lunch and you have 8.0 paid hours. Add up every day for the weekly total. This calculator does it automatically, including overnight shifts where the end time is earlier than the start.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60. So 30 minutes = 0.5 hours and 45 minutes = 0.75 hours. Payroll uses decimal hours, so 8 hours 30 minutes becomes 8.5. This calculator shows both the decimal total and the hours-and-minutes format.
How is gross pay from a timesheet calculated?
Multiply the total hours by the hourly rate: gross pay = hours × rate. For 40 hours at $18.50/hour that is $740. Enter an hourly rate in this calculator to see gross pay for the week (before tax and other deductions).
