In the US, 15–20% is standard for restaurant table service, with 18–20% for good service. Counter service is often 10% or a couple of dollars, food delivery 10–15% with a sensible minimum, and bartenders $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of the tab. Norms differ widely by country — in Japan tipping is not customary at all, while in much of Europe 5–10% or rounding up is typical because service charges are often included.
Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Etiquette traditionally says the pre-tax subtotal, and nobody will ever object to that. Many people simply tip on the final total for simplicity — on a typical bill the difference is small (tipping 18% on tax adds roughly 1.5% of the subtotal in most US states). Choose one approach and be consistent.
